Get Dental Implant Ready at Jupiter Dentistry!
If you’ve been told you don’t have enough bone for dental implants, you might have felt that door close a little. The good news is it doesn’t have to stay closed. A sinus lift is one of the most reliable procedures we use at Jupiter Dentistry to give patients who were once told they “weren’t candidates” a clear path to implants. It’s a targeted solution to a very specific problem, and in the right hands, it opens the door to a complete, confident smile.

What Exactly Is a Sinus Lift?
When you lose teeth in the back of your upper jaw, the bone beneath that area can shrink over time. At the same time, the maxillary sinus, one of the air-filled cavities sitting just above that area, can expand downward to fill the space. The result is a narrowing gap between where your jawbone ends and where your sinus begins.
For dental implants to succeed, they need a certain depth of solid bone to anchor into. When that space isn’t there, implants can’t be placed safely. A sinus lift solves this by gently lifting the sinus membrane and placing bone graft material in the space below, giving your body the scaffolding it needs to grow new, strong bone.
Over several months, that graft material integrates with your natural bone, creating a stable foundation for implants that will last.
What Happens During a Sinus Lift?
-
Before Your Procedure
Everything starts with a thorough evaluation. Our dentists will review your medical history, take detailed imaging, and assess your sinus health to make sure you’re a strong candidate. If there’s any active sinus condition, we’ll address that first, as your safety comes before anything else.
We’ll also talk through your comfort options. Local anesthesia is standard, but if the idea of being awake makes you anxious, we offer oral sedation and IV sedation as well. Many of our patients choose to be completely relaxed for the procedure, and they’re genuinely surprised by how easy it turns out to be.
-
During the Procedure
Once you’re comfortable, here’s what happens:
- We access the surgical site through a small opening in the gum tissue at the back of your upper jaw.
- A small window is carefully created in the bone; this gives us access to the sinus membrane beneath.
- The membrane is gently lifted upward, creating a space between it and the floor of the sinus.
- Bone graft material is placed in that space. This acts as a scaffold that your own bone will grow into and around over time.
- The site is closed and left to heal.
The procedure typically takes one to two hours. Many patients are surprised by how calm and manageable it feels, especially with sedation.
-
After the Procedure
You’ll head home the same day. For the first few days, some swelling and mild soreness are completely normal; your body is beginning to heal. Most patients manage comfortably with over-the-counter pain relievers, though we’ll provide a prescription if needed.
A few things to keep in mind during early recovery:
- Avoid blowing your nose forcefully; this is the most important instruction and one we’ll remind you of before you leave.
- Take it easy for the first several days. No heavy lifting, no strenuous exercise.
- Keep your mouth clean gently, following the specific hygiene instructions we give you.
- Attend your scheduled follow-up visits; we’ll monitor your healing at every stage.
The Benefits of a Sinus Lift
It’s easy to think of a sinus lift as purely a technical prerequisite, a box to check before implants. But the impact goes further than that.
- It makes implants possible where they otherwise couldn’t be placed safely. For many patients, this is the difference between implants and a lifetime of workarounds.
- It supports long-term implant stability. Bone that has been properly augmented gives implants a strong, predictable foundation, one built to last.
- It restores facial contour. Bone loss in the upper jaw can cause a sunken or prematurely aged appearance. Augmentation helps restore natural fullness.
- It improves the long-term success of your entire smile restoration. A well-supported implant is a durable implant.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
Can anyone get a sinus lift?
Not everyone is a candidate. Active sinus infections, certain medical conditions, and smoking can all affect eligibility or timing. That’s exactly what your initial evaluation is for: to assess your specific situation and make sure we’re recommending what’s genuinely right for you. If a sinus lift isn’t the right path, we’ll tell you, and we’ll discuss what alternatives might work.
-
Are there alternatives to a sinus lift?
In some cases, yes. Shorter implants that require less vertical bone, or different bone regeneration techniques that avoid the sinus entirely, may be viable alternatives depending on your anatomy. Dr. Tagg or Dr. Ajmo will review your 3D scan and discuss every option that makes sense for your situation. The goal is always to find the path that gives you the best outcome, not the most complex one.
