1. What do you see in my X-rays that the first plan did not mention?
Cosmetic plans built from a quick look in the mirror miss things. Decay under an old filling, a cracked root, bone loss around a tooth that’s about to receive an expensive veneer. Because the second opinion at Jupiter Dentistry includes a full set of X-rays, Dr. Tagg is looking at the whole picture before he says a word about the plan you brought in. If implants are part of the conversation, ask whether a 3D CT scan is warranted. Our dentists pre-plan every implant surgery with 3D CT imaging, which shows bone height, width, and nerve position that a flat X-ray cannot. If the first office quoted implants without one, that’s worth asking about.
2. Do I actually need this many teeth treated?
This is the question that most often changes a cosmetic dental treatment plan. Ten veneers is a common recommendation. So is eight. So is six. The right number depends on how wide your smile is when you laugh, not on a package price. Ask our dentist to walk you through which teeth show when you speak and smile naturally, and whether a shorter plan would get you the same result.
3. Is this a cosmetic problem, or a health problem wearing a cosmetic disguise?
Worn, short, or chipped front teeth are often the visible end of something else: nighttime grinding, a bite that is off, or gum disease that has changed the gum line. Put veneers over a grinding problem, and you will be back for replacements sooner than anyone promised. Ask what is causing the damage, not just how to cover it. 4. Why this material, and what were the alternatives?
A plan that says “veneers” without saying what kind is incomplete. Jupiter Dentistry works with traditional porcelain veneers, ultra-thin Lumineers, zirconia veneers, and composite veneers, and each one trades off differently on thickness, strength, translucency, and cost. The same is true for crowns versus veneers on a tooth that is heavily filled. Ask us why we would choose one over another for your specific teeth, and what we would not recommend for you. A dentist who can explain the case against an option is one who has actually thought about it.
5. How much of my natural tooth will be removed?
Porcelain veneers require removing a thin layer of enamel so the veneer sits flush. That step is permanent. Some plans call for far more reduction than necessary, and some teeth are better candidates for a no-prep or minimal-prep option. Ask for a tooth-by-tooth answer. If two dentists give you very different answers about the same teeth, that difference is the most important thing you will learn from your second opinion.
6. Can I see this exact kind of case, done here, on a real patient?
Stock photos are everywhere in cosmetic dentistry. Ask what you will need to do at home, whether you will need a night guard, and how often the practice wants to see you. Also ask what happens if a veneer chips in year three.
